Parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Cancun, Mexico celebrates first anniversary

One year ago, the Orthodox faithful living in Cancun, Mexico, appealed to His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow and all Russia to bless the establishment of a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church. The administration of the parish of the Moscow Patriarchate abroad was given to the interim Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh who was tasked with organizing regular divine services for the community as well as to explore the possibilities of opening the parish. In the past year, with the blessing of Bishop Matthew, the rector of Holy Protection Church in Mexico, Priest Kyrill Chacon often visited the community of believers in Cancun, serving Divine Liturgies, sacraments and services, thanks to the local Roman Catholic Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo who has lovingly provided facilities for the community.

On the feast of the Holy Theophany, January 19, 2020, with the blessing of Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, Vice-Chancellor Priest Mark Rashkov along with Priest Kyrill celebrated the Divine Liturgy and led the Great Blessing of Water. During the Liturgy, the Sacrament of Holy Baptism was served for local resident Dimitry. Singing during the services were the wives of Frs. Mark & Kyrill, Matushkas Anastasia and Catalina.

At the conclusion of the service, Fr. Mark greeted all those with the feast of the Theophany and relayed the blessings of Bishop Matthew. In addition, with the blessing of the archpastor, Fr. Mark presented Fr. Kyrill with the Jubilee Patriarchal Medal in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Patriarchate in the Russian Orthodox Church with gratitude for his labors in providing pastoral care to the members of our church in Mexico.

Interaction between the clergy and faithful continued during a meal, during which Fr. Mark answered parishioners’ questions as well as discussed practical questions regarding the organization of the parish.

In the later part of the day, Frs. Mark & Kyrill met with Monsignor Pedro Pablo. During the discussions, the clerics of the Moscow Patriarchate expressed their gratitude for providing a church to serve Orthodox divine services. On behalf of Bishop Matthew, Fr. Mark presented the bishop of Cancun with an icon of the Mother of God and relayed the greetings on the recent feasts of the Nativity & Theophany.
