Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church attends Holocaust Remembrance Day in New York

Every year, at the end of January, the United Nations commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day. On January 27, Red Army troops liberated one of the worst Nazi death camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

On Saturday, January 25, the Park East Synagogue in New York hosted a memorial service and a forum “We Must Never Forget” with the participation of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Rabbi Arthur Schneier, President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

The event was attended by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations and the UN Security Council V.A. Nebenzya, Secretary General of Russia in New York S.K. Ovsyannikov, military attaché of the liberating countries of concentration camp prisoners, Permanent Representatives to the UN and diplomats of countries participating in the anti-axis coalition, as well as high representatives of the US Congress, other government and public organizations.

With the blessing of the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Interim Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Bishop Matthew Sourozh, Vice-Chancellor of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Priest Mark Rashkov, relayed the greeting of His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow and all Russia to the participants of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

During the exchange of views, event participants expressed concern about the rise in anti-Semitism worldwide and called for a joint response to hatred and intolerance, while preserving the memory of millions of Holocaust victims.

The representative of the Russian Orthodox Church spoke about the efforts made by His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill and the Russian Orthodox Church to bring the attention of the world community to the problem of anti-Semitism and religious intolerance in the modern world at meetings with political, social and religious leaders; in the media, at various international venues and forums, including within the framework of the Interreligious Council of Russia.
