On 9 March 2025, the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the clergy and faithful of the Central States Deanery gathered for their yearly celebration of Lenten Vespers and the Moleben for Those Who Have Departed into Error. This year's gathering was hosted by St. Elias parish in Battle Creek, MI.
The services were presided over by Fr. Joshua Genig (Rector of St. Innocent in Redford and Dean of the Central States), Fr. James Anthony (Rector of St. John Chrysostom in Grand Rapids), Fr. Basil Gross (Rector of St. Andrew in East Lansing), and host, Fr. Lawrence Bacik. In addition to priests, Deacon Michael Cook (St. John Chrysostom, Grand Rapids) and Deacon Andrew Shauver (St. Andrew, East Lansing) served, with the help of 20 subdeacons and servers.
Fr. Joshua offered a homily at the end of the Moleben, imploring the faithful to stay close to Christ, reflecting on the Moleben as a reminder of our own weaknesses. Furthermore, he bid the faithful to pray for the peace of the world and the Church, particularly in the Ukraine, Russia, Syria, and the Holy Land. Throughout the evening, the relics of St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco and St. Porphyrios of Gaza (both brought from St. Innocent) were available for veneration.
Following the divine services, the faithful of St. Elias prepared a wonderful lenten meal for the nearly 100 participants. In addition to the joy of fellowship, Fr. Joshua presented the three priests with small relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov to take back to their parishes for veneration. All presented expressed how deeply they enjoy being together and how grateful they are for their diocese and Mother Church.
